Individualized Studies

Individualized Studies

The Individualized Studies A.S. is designed for students who are currently working or have experience in a professional career. The student-defined curriculum is designed to offer students the opportunity to develop career-related goals and pursue a program which is uniquely special and focuses on educational and professional development.

Getting Started

Special admission is required for the Individualized Studies A.S. To get started, follow these five steps:

Step 1:  Exploration
Attend an Individual Studies information session onsite or online at https://breeze5.metnet.edu/indstudies/.

Step 2:  Apply
If you are a new student, you must complete the NHCC Application for Admission and the Individualized Studies Application. If you are a current student, you only need to complete the Individualized Studies Application.

Individualized Studies Applications are accepted throughout the year.

Step 3:  Enroll in PLA 1010
After you are accepted into the Individualized Studies program, you will enroll in PLA 1010 - Individualized Studies Development. This course will help you develop your Individualized Degree Plan and also to explore other ways to enhance your education! Enrollment in the course is suggested early in your NHCC college career in order to develop a clear outline of coursework. The course is offered fall and spring only. The class currently meets the first and last sessions in the classroom. All other sessions are completed online.

Step 4:  Credit for Prior Learning (optional)
Do you have professional experience that may apply to your educational goals? If so, you may be able to receive credit toward your degree. Click here for more information about Credit for Prior Learning.

Step 5:  Communication
Regular communication between Independent Studies students and the Adult Education and Training department will continue throughout your time at NHCC. Whether it's online or in-person, we are here to help you succeed!
