The arts are growing at North Hennepin Community College in Brooklyn Park.

The college now offers a new Associate in Fine Arts degree in both theater and creative writing. North Hennepin also has a new Associate of Arts degree with an emphasis in film.

This fall North Hennepin even launched a new course in stage combat as part of the expanded fine arts program. The stage combat instructor, Mike Anderson, said the class quickly filled to capacity.

"Stage combat is the art and science of presenting violence - staged violence - in a safe and repeatable and effective, artistically satisfying manner," said Anderson.

Anderson also added that students who choose to take a skills proficiency test at the end of the course can get certified as an "actor combatant" with the Society of American Fight Directors. North Hennepin is currently the only Minnesota college to offer a stage combat class that will prepare students for certification.
